Sri Lanka is located in the International Whaling Commission’s protected zone in the Indian Ocean. Now Sri Lanka is capable of offering many ports to observe whales and dolphins in Sri Lanka. Mainly Mirissa, (Southern coast – Dondra Point), Trincomalee (port city in Eastern Province), and Kalpitiya (North western province) are the highly recommended locations to cite these beautiful creatures in Sri Lanka.
Currently large pods of dolphins are migrating to the Indian Ocean and many local and foreign visitors are continuously taking boat trips to see the beautiful motions of Dolphins and Whales offshore.
The tourists can observe Blue Whales (Approximately 108 ft in length and 172 metric tons in weight) which can be called as the existing largest creature. Also Brydes Whales which is relatively small in size (25 tonnes), killer whale or blackfish which can be called as the largest mammals of the Dolphin species, sperm whales which has the largest brain in size of all animals, also the second largest creatures of the planet Finback Whales, Spinner Dolphins which are well known for entertainments around the world, Bottlenose dolphins always belongs to a group minimum 20 which is called as a pod, Striped Dolphin which can be found in tropical water, Risso’s dolphins can easily identified since the extensive white scarring and rarely Sarawak Dolphin which can be found in deep waters in the Pacific Ocean.
